Welcome!

Hon. Moses Jn. Baptiste
Minister for Ministry of Health Wellness
and Elderly Affairs, Saint Lucia

The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs supports the CARPHA 68th Annual Health Research Conference and welcomes you to this beautiful island of Saint Lucia. We will create the environment to foster the exchange of knowledge among health and allied health professionals and policymakers through their presentations, consultations and discussions, as they try to find solutions to public health issues impacting the Caribbean.

This conference gives us another opportunity to advance effective health policies, programmes and best practices in the Caribbean through scientific outputs from research done on data from the Caribbean. This evidence-based approach will allow for strengthening of health systems and the mitigation of socioeconomic and health impacts of identified issues of public health concern, including crime and violence, the focus of this conference.

You are well positioned to analyze the determinants, preventive measures and interventions to address crime and violence in the Caribbean territories. Identified solutions must incorporate, an integrative public health approach with multidisciplinary inputs from local, national, regional and international stakeholders.

In closing, on behalf of the Government and people of Saint Lucia, I bid you well during the CARPHA 68th Health Research Conference scheduled for April 25 to 27, 2024 and look forward to the positive social change to be derived from this conference. In addition, please take some time to visit the Pitons and other scenic sites in our beautiful Saint Lucia.

Dr. Joy St. John
Executive Director
CARPHA

In the wider world, crime and violence are devastating governments, businesses, communities, schools, families, and livelihoods. The Caribbean has not been able to escape the scourge, which has crept into this beautiful corner of the world. We need to halt the erosion of CARICOM’s developmental potential, through a uniquely Caribbean way of managing this current crisis and preventing a worsening despite the limited financial and technical resources available to us to effectively implement change.

I am pleased that the Heads of Government of CARICOM have provided the Region with a blueprint for coordinated whole of society action through the outcome document, Declaration by Heads of Government on Crime and Violence as a Public Health Issue of April 2023. The initiative to approach its management as a public health issue demonstrates that there is commitment to exploring all avenues of Prevention. CARPHA has responded through the powerful medium of Research, for we must understand what violence is happening, why it is happening and to whom. Therefore CARPHA’s 68th Annual Health Research Conference, is appropriately themed “Violence in the Caribbean - A Public Health Crisis”. This Conference will showcase the Caribbean situation, seek solutions to our peculiar challenges and bring multiple sectors together to start the conversations which will build consensus for effective national and Regional actions.

Saint. Lucia, the Helen of the West will be host to this year’s conference where our academic scholars, public health practitioners, researchers (young and experienced), sponsors and all other attendees will take a deep dive into all things public health but with greater emphasis on crime and violence in this region through the lens of the public health approach.

So come, let Saint Lucia inspire you to be creative, learn, network and relax at the 68th CARPHA Health Research Conference.

Show your support for the conference by registering to attend and sharing with your networks.

Welcome all!
